I am prepared for this question to have a terrible answer.

Um, so... Delicious?

I left the country for three months, and my account and bookmarks are... gone? I have no emails about this from delicious. They are just... gone?

Oh, no. I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

Delicious was recently bought by AVOS, and before the transfer of ownership everyone who wanted to keep their existing account had to opt in to the AVOS TOS. I feel like that was longer ago than 3 months, but maybe only just.

If you opted in to the TOS but still can't access your bookmarks, it would be worth contacting Delicious support to see if they can do anything about it. The site's been really screwed up since they relaunched and a lot of people have had weird problems with it. (A lot of people have also decamped to Pinboard and other sites.)

Here's the Delicious help page:

Hi, here from the /network page. Following from the post above, here is a GDocs Spreadsheet of Delicious users who moved to other sites in The Great Delicious Migration if you were following somebody, though I suspect the list is largely skewed towards fandom-type peoples. A few major kinkmemes have moved on to Pinboard, which is a pay service.

Here is a major post by [personal profile] bookshop on the whole Delicious debacle (if you're wondering about Diigo, there's one on that too). Hopefully you can get your bookmarks back!

The problem here is that yeah, they sent out a notice when they originally got bought. And it said something like 'transfer will take place X date, watch out for more info [the month before].' And then they sent an email about a week or so before the transfer, which could easily have ended up in your spambox, too.

I know there was a workaround to get back your files if you didn't opt in, but people were saying it wasn't going to last long, and eventually that loophole will close. If it's not on [personal profile] bookshop's post, check [personal profile] seperis? I don't use delicious, so I didn't bookmark it.

I was going to leave a link to [personal profile] bookshop, too. I'm glad someone beat me to it. :)

The opt in happened longer than three months ago. IIRC they announced in spring that the switch would happen in July but then nothing changed for quite some time, though you could opt in then, and the website reminded you when you logged in. So you should have gotten a mail and seen a reminder. Then in late September they did finally switch and relaunch and delicious became completely unusable. I paid for a pinboard account and am now there.

Pinboard is the current favourite - it's really solid and the guy who owns/runs it made a lot of changes to better accomodate fandom. It's a one-time fee to sign up, but it's super cheap. Something like 9$ for life. Pinboard.in.
